Combinatorics
Counting without listing, using the sum and product rules, nCr, Pascal's triangle, stars and bars, inclusion-exclusion and the pigeonhole principle.
The problem
Combinatorics is counting: in how many ways can something be arranged, chosen or distributed? In contests the answer is usually huge and printed modulo a prime, and the work is to find a formula instead of enumerating.
